    He was a musician that couldn't resist playing when he was around. He just had to sit in, and nobody would say, "Don't sit in" to him, because it always seemed to add something that just propelled whatever group he sat in with. I remember at the Newport Jazz Festival George Wein saying, "That Gerry Mulligan. He's all over the place, sitting in with everybody. " Maybe some people didn't like it ...
