What was the pay like then in Kansas City? If:I don't think it was very much. I hadn't joined the band then. I heard that Count Basie had to work either one or two weeks without pay. Andy Kirk's band went in next and we had a singer with us and he got in a dispute with one of the gangsters there. The gangster looked at WILLIAMS him and he says, "Andy, if it wasn't for you I'd kill him! "
